Sheep & Wool Trail

In Connemara, sheep outnumber people and are a familiar sight across the landscape, from rocky hills to quiet roads. These hardy animals, descended from Scottish Blackface sheep, thrive in the region’s rugged terrain alongside skilled Border Collies. The area’s rich wool heritage lives on in traditional tweed and iconic Aran jumpers, while Connemara Hill Lamb, known for its sweet, tender flavour, holds EU PGI status. From Joyce Country to the Aran Islands, the sheep story is woven into the culture, cuisine, and craft of this unique region.
