Kylemore Abbey

Kylemore Abbey & Victorian Walled Gardens is the most visited attraction in the West of Ireland.
Built between 1867 & 1871 by Mitchell Henry & his wife Margaret who fell in love with the area while on honeymoon a couple of years previous.

Following Margaret’s untimely death Mitchell sold the property to The Duke & Duchess of Manchester who only spent a few years at the castle before selling to an investment company.

In the 1920’s the Irish Benedictine Nuns purchased the estate and opened an international boarding school and day school for local girls. It was the Nuns who opened the house & gardens to the public to enjoy, adding the craft shop and restaurant in later years. Sadly the school closed in 2010.

Today guests can explore the Castle, Gothic Church, walled gardens and the craft shop & restaurant and just 40 minutes from Ballynahinch it is the perfect past time when staying with us.

Our Castles & Gardens package includes entry to Kylemore along with two night’s bed and breakfast, a guided walk of the estate at the end of which you plant your own tree and entry to Brigit’s Garden and Aughnanure Castle.
